Basic Structural Steel
Perfect for creating welded and riveted structures such as steel frame buildings, general fabrication and engineering.
Our non-normalised structural steel range includes S275JR and S355JR.
S275JR (43A)
A low-carbon non-alloy structural steel used in welded and riveted structures.
Examples of uses for S275JR (43A) basic structural steel:
Heat treated structural steel for manufacturing structures and building frames. Use normalised steel where additional strength and ductility is required.
S355J2+N (50D)
Low-carbon structural steel with good corrosion resistance, high durability, and good forming properties.
Examples of uses for S355J2+N (50D) normalized structural steel:
Order steel and have it shaped and finished and ready to use. Our facility in Birmingham is equipped to treat, cut and machine steel on site. Explore our steel processing services.
Structural Steel Applications
Due to its strength, durability and adaptability, structural steel is used extensively across a range of industries, including construction, engineering and manufacturing. It forms a solid structure and backbone for buildings due to the beams, columns and frameworks which it provides for commercial buildings as well as residential houses and flats. Structural steel plates also offer a reliable support structure for warehouses and factories; as well as offering effective decking for bridges and infrastructure projects. They’re commonly used for platforms, walkways and mezzanine flooring in manufacturing environments, offering a sturdy support and surface where heavy loads are being transported and placed.
Structural Steel FAQs
Do you stock structural steel for urgent or short lead-time projects?
Absolutely, at VSN Steels, we stock a huge range of structural steel plates which means that we can offer a super-fast turnaround and delivery for those projects which are especially time-sensitive. Our highly-experienced team and state-of-the-art technology means that our steel processing is handled swiftly and efficiently, speeding up the operations and logistics overall so that you can have your required components with minimal delay.
How is structural steel preserved for outdoor use?
Structural steel can be treated and coated in order to improve corrosion resistance, and thus, longevity. Some of the more common protective and coating options consist of galvanising, painting, powder coating or the application of anti-corrosion primers.
Do you offer nationwide delivery of structural steel?
Yes, at VSN Steels, we offer nationwide coverage, meaning that we can deliver to sites all over the UK. Our Logistics team plans and schedules deliveries ahead of time to ensure that you get your structural steel components exactly when you need them, which means that we can cater to both urgent and last-minute orders.
Cutting thick steel to exact specifications is one of our specialities. We use CNC profile-cutting machines to ensure accurate shaping. These can be used to cut precise angles and shapes from steel plate. We can provide gas cutting and plasma cutting.
We offer specialist steel milling and machining operations to shape flat steel products to the required specifications. We carry over 3000 tonnes of stock available in thicknesses from 6mm to 600mm.
We specialise in surface grinding for steel blanks, providing accurate sizing and a smooth finish. Our Lumsden Grinders use abrasive stones on an electromagnetic rotary table to remove stock from the surface of the workpiece at a much higher rate than other surface grinders.
Heat Treatment and Stress Relieving is used to transform the structural properties of steel to produce different effects. We use a highly efficient, gas-fired Bogie Hearth furnace to treat large steel products at various stages in their manufacture.
VSN Steels Ltd can provide shot-blasting to finish steel plate and profiles to the required specifications. We carry over 3000 tonnes of stock available in thicknesses from 6mm to 600mm.
